The "pins" are the dark part of the joint and the "tails" are the lighter part. Making the pins narrow like this is purely for aesthetic reasons. However, this can only be accomplished by cutting the joint by hand. Only a fine dovetail saw can create a space between the dovetails small enough to accept a pin that almost comes to a point.
